Coaching this year at Spring Break in Lake Lure was a full circle moment. In 2020, I was the team’s president and our board had planned to go to Lake Lure for the first time post PCB. That shot to an abrupt halt three days prior to leaving for the trip due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We had selected Lake Lure as we felt it had qualities which promoted community and ease of training for the team. With housing on site and group dinners we felt it would mirror PCB in the locations’s ability to foster camaraderie, create life long memories, and facilitate productive multi day training sessions.
Six years later, the location did not disappoint. The team was able to conduct all 12 practice sessions. Practice conditions were a good mix of beautiful water with a few more challenging days of wind but never anything that was a safety concern or stressor for coaching. It was lovely! Beyond practice, I saw rowers from all squads hanging out: enjoying tie dye together, basking on the docks in the sun, and partaking in a ymca warmup together. Lastly, even for coaches, this environment was more relaxed and allowed us to hang out, support each other, and collaborate more.
