On Saturday, September 27th, 2025, Georgia Tech Crew dedicated our newest 4+ women's shell to Catherine Owens. Catherine embodied her passion for civil engineering through her advancement of Atlanta’s legacy of trails and alternate transportation via the Atlanta Beltline. As GTCA president, she had the foresight to start our endowment 15 years ago which has become a focal point in the team's resilience and progress through adversity.
We'd like to thank Janet Kinard, Anne-Marie DeBacker, Sara Wilson-Thacker, and BJ Owens for their wonderful speeches and invite you to read a piece from BJ Owens about the day here.
Thanks to Kerry Brown, Rhiannon Morgan Jones, Sara Wilson-Thacker, Kristen Fowks, and Kelley Conway for joining us on an alumni row on the Hooch!
If you're ever in town and want to hop in a boat or ride along in a launch, don't hesitate to reach out to president@gtcrew.com and the team would be happy to have you!
Thank you to all the alumni who participated in the selection process for Head of the Charles this year.

While Tail of the Tiger was certainly a smaller race experience, it gave us a confidence boost in the starting speed of our 1V8+ (even without two members of the actual 1V8+ lineup racing that day) and our 1V4+. It's of course exciting to be closer in times to a primary competitor and even get the upper hand to win the gold, but given that we never know the details what kind of day our competitors were having or whether that was their top lineup it was our own time stacked against our own goals we set prior to the race that was the true win of the day. What it also signals is progress towards our long-term goals of generating true squad- and team-wide depth.
We're not impressed by having just one or two boats or one or two squads finding success, especially given our size. We're looking to find speed across 1v, 2v, 3v lineups and starting out the season with a smaller margin than anticipated between our 1V and 2V 8+s bodes well for how we can contribute to pushing GT Crew further as one team.
We're looking next to maintaining both HOCR bids with top half finishes, gathering hardware for our 1V8+ and 1V4+, top 10 finishes for our 2v8+, 2v4+, and top half finishes for all other races we've entered at Head of the Hooch; and rounding out the fall season with another team points trophy at Head of the South. Achieving those goals gives us some solid benchmarks for what it will take to rise further in the ranks at SIRA and ultimately ACRA in the spring.
GTCA has entered and confirmed lineups for the Men's Alumni 8+ and Women's Alumnae 8+ that race on November 3rd. Stay tuned for our next newsletter to learn who our participating alumni are!
We're excited to announce that the team has hired a new coach, Sophie Klessel! She'll be working with the varsity women's squad as an assistant coach this season. She comes with a well-decorated rowing resume, including rowing in a D1 NCAA program at UPenn, the U.S. Junior National team (where she and her 8+ won gold at the 2021 World Rowing Championships in Bulgaria) and RowAmerica Rye. Coach Sophie is currently pursuing her BME PhD at Georgia Tech!
We've received all merchandise from our suppliers, and we'll begin shipping orders around Thanksgiving!
We'd like to recognize the passing of dedicated alumnus Jeff Woodard '95. Jeff graduated from Tech with a degree in Electrical Engineering and had a successful career in a variety of roles within the field of information technology. Along with being an excellent oarsman, he helped the team get out of several pinches during his years. If you'd like to learn more about his time with the program, you can read his piece on the 1992-1993 Men's Lightweight 8+, one of the ten fastest lightweight crews in the country that year, here.
Following the dedication of the Catherine Owens, the Endowment Campaign Committee shared its goals and vision for the future of GT Crew with all in attendance. We invite you to learn more about our mission to build lasting resilience and success for the program by visiting gtcrewalumni.org/endowment.
We’ll be pushing our Month of Giving this December! Your participation—whether through a one-time gift or a recurring donation—will play a crucial role in sustaining the program for the next generation of rowers.
With the total value of our endowments marked at $300,000 currently, we're seeking to double that to $600,000 by 2030.
Setting up a monthly recurring donation is one of the easiest ways to contribute. It provides steady support for the program while allowing you to give effortlessly, without having to actively manage a donation.
We're seeking more of our new alumni to give back, whether through coaching, volunteering, or a donation, irrespective of the amount. Consistent involvement from our graduates will build the foundation for the team’s continued success
Obvioiusly we'd love your donation to the endowment, but there's so many more ways you can continue to help the program:
Your Input
Email your ideas to board@gtcrewalumni.org! We want to know what you would like to see from the GTCA to better server all friends of the team. This year we've tried to go big with a retro merchandise line and alumni boats at major fall regattas. Let us know what more you'd like to see!
Your Time
The GTCA is always looking for wiling volunteers to head one existing projects or take on new ones! If you're interested in participating, email the board and we'd be happy to have you join us.
Your Friends
Forward our communications to your old teammates if they haven't been receiving them! Encourage them to come to Happy Hours! Ask them directly to give back! The more folks that we can engage, the stronger our push to grow the endowment will become.
Support from you is crucial to ensuring that our rowing program can compete and succeed at the highest level. Here are a few examples of what your giving provides for our student-athletes:
$100 - 1 uniform
$400 - 1 oar
$800 - 1 coxbox
$12,000 - Cost of Team ACRA Championship or Head of the Charles Trip
$25,000 - 1 four
$50,000 - 1 eight
