2009-2010 Season Begins.
Thursday, August 20th, 2009
The 2009-2010 season has officially begun as school started for Georgia Tech students this week. The returning varsity team had their annual meeting with the coaches on Monday, and Meetings for the Curious are already underway.
Freshman are on campus and they certainly know about GT Crew, as the Zung has been hung in the Barnes and Noble bookstore in Tech Square since 2004, the team has been recruiting at every FASET this summer, and every Georgia Tech freshman has recieved a letter in the mail from GT Crew. It's going to be a great year... so good luck to the whole team! Know any incoming freshmen? Send them to the GT Crew page to sign up!
In addition, the GTCA has a lot to look forward to this year as we head into elections, homecoming planning, head races and all the good stuff that comes with a racing season. We hope you're ready to join us and more importantly, we hope to see you this Fall!

October 17th, 2009: Annual GTCA Homecoming Tailgate Once again this event is open to all friends, family and alumni of GT Crew. Socialize with fellow rowers, alumni and friends while enjoying free food and drink before the big game. BYOC: bring your own chair (we'll have the rest) and no RSVP will be required. Campus location will be announced soon. The GTCA is still in the planning stage for this tailgate, but a repeat of the corn hole tournament has already been requested. Talks have begun for a video chat with alumni friends in Boston who will be cheering on GT Crew at the Head of the Charles on the same weekend. More information will come soon, so please check www.alumni.gtcrew.com for updates.

Stay tuned for more information as we may get our local Boston alumni to host a GTCA event during the regatta! If you're interested in helping to plan this event, please let us know.
November 7th, 2009: Head of the Hooch
As the second largest regatta in the United States, the Head of the Hooch has become a sight to see in it's newest location in Chattanooga. Well, this year, we invite you to join us there and watch some races together. There will possibly be other scheduled GTCA events in Chattanooga so please keep an eye open for more information. Perhaps even an alumni boat could enter?
January, 2010: Atlanta Erg Sprints
Another annual GTCA event where we are always looking for volunteers. The date will be released shortly. If you are interested in helping out, please let us know.
GTCA Fall Elections
Happy Birthday to us! It has been a year since the GT Crew Alumni were officially made an Affinity Group with Georgia Tech. And because of that, it's election time! Per Article 4, Section 1 of the GTCA Constitution, all elected board members shall hold their respective offices for a term of two years. All positions will be on staggered terms (Treasurer, Communications and Merchandise staggering with President, Events Chair and Secretary). Therefore, the current GTCA positions that are up for re-election are:
- Events Coordinator
Elections are to be held during the week of October 5 - October 9, 2009.
Nominations are open from September 14 - September 25, 2009.
Nominations will only be accepted from Active Members. Nominations can be e-mail to the current GTCA President. The nominee will be notified, and if accepted, the nominee bio will appear on the nominations page.
A simple majority vote of active members is needed to elect an officer. All voting will be done by secret ballot through the GTCA website.New positions are official sworn in at the October GTCA banquet during homecoming weekend. You can find more information on our website and if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know.
If you have received a t-shirt this year, then you are an active member for 2009 and this election process. If you haven't, go get one!
Join a Committee
At the last GTCA meeting, the board members voted in a new committee. As all committees before this one, it is open to all members of the GTCA. If you would like to join the new Steering Committee or any other existing committee, we urge you to visit our website to learn more about them. Once you have completed our form, the committee leader will be in touch with you to discuss your future role with the group as well as upcoming meeting times. We look forward to working with you.
Steering Committee (headed up by Bob Baxley & Cassi Niemann)
The Steering Committee will evaluate the current structure of GT Crew with a focus on coach staffing and capital investment decisions. The ultimate goal of the committee is to build a model or plan towards governing future coaching, officer, and alumni relationship at GT Crew. This includes developing a structure where GT Crew can utilize the GTCA to facilitate, mediate and/or monitor coach staffing and capital investment decisions. The output of this committee will be proposed GT Crew and GTCA legislation to implement the agreed upon interaction model.
Addition to the Coaching Staff
The GTCA would like to welcome Alex Porter, the latest addition to the GT Crew coaching staff. Alex will be assisting the Varsity Men with Coach Rob Canavan. He has already made a good impression on the team as he has been at FASET to help recruit incoming freshmen. The team is really looking forward to having him help them out this year. Alex started rowing freshman year of college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and immediately fell in love with the sport. Alex tells us that RPI Crew is a relatively small program, but as we know from GT, he learned a lot and was very active with the team's social life and administration - from recruiting to equipment maintenance. Early in the spring semester of his junior year the team found itself without a coach, so Alex went out and got his certification and started coaching. In the fall of 2008 he took over the coaching of the novice team with a fellow teammate and trained up the fastest novice team RPI Crew had seen in years. Alex decided Around then that coaching crew was a career path he wanted to follow.
Alex received a B.S. in Economics from RPI in May 2009 and will probably pursue an MBA in the future. A few of his hobbies are woodworking, ultimate frisbee, and skiing. He hates winter training and loathes the prospect of long hours on the erg. He likes all music that rocks, especially anything Jimmy Page or Green Day. He also enjoys cooking and has a strong belief that all men should know how to barbecue.
Welcome to the team Alex!
We'd love to hear what you're up to - send us a message and keep us all up to date by simply filling out our form!
