The team had a great time at the FIRA regatta in Sarasota this weekend!
We had a lot of fun traveling to Florida as a team on a charter bus, but
once we got there it was game faces on and racing on our minds.
Through the hot Florida sun and slightly choppy race course, your
Yellow Jackets pulled off a great showing against some major Florida
Schools!
As this was a regatta hosted for Florida schools by the Florida
Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA), GT was not eligible to win
the team points trophy even though we were competitors on the field, as
we did last year! Either way, those Florida crews knew who the real
champions of the day were, trophy or no.
Racing took place over two days, Friday and Saturday, with some
Novice/Frosh boats racing on Friday and the rest the next morning. On
Friday we had both of our Novice Men’s and Women’s Fours finish with our
first gold medals of the regatta, setting us up for victory! Way to go
guys and girls!
Early the next morning the Varsity 8’s went off first. We had the Men’s
V8 place 2nd overall and the Women’s V8 place 5th overall! Great racing!
The next races were the JV8’s where we had both the Men’s and Women’s
teams place 2nd, taking home silver medals! Awesome job guys!
The Women’s Varsity Lightweight 8, getting some betting shirts in the
process, won our first Gold of Saturday racing! Great job girls!
The pairs went off next. The Men’s pair placed 3rd overall and the
Women’s pair placed 2nd overall! Awesome job pairs!! Continuing with
small boats, we had David Judah and Sean Gibel brave FIRA on their own
as they raced in Singles. They both did amazingly as David placed 2nd
and Sean placed 3rd! Great job!
Next our Novice Men put out a Lightweight 8 that placed 3rd overall!
Awesome job Novices!
More betting shirts were won by our Varsity Men’s and Women’s
Lightweight Fours! Jackson Esoda, Andrew Dluhy, Blake Vander Wood, and
Nick Hudak blew the competition away as they shot down the course
clenching the first place victory! Awesome job everyone!
GT really showed Florida what we’re all about as we schooled them at
their home field!
This weekend we have the SIRA regatta in Oak Ridge, Tennessee! Our
competition is at one of the
highest its going to be as we have names from across the country, such
as Ohio State, Texas, Tulane, Florida, Jacksonville, Temple, Washington,
Notre Dame, and Delaware, coming to compete, bring the heat, and
challenge your Yellow Jackets on the water! |

The team loaded a charter bus at 5am Friday morning to head down to
Sarasota, FL for the FIRA Championship
Regatta. This regatta serves as the state championship for Florida
collegiate rowing programs and Georgia Tech has been invited the last
few years to compete as a guest school. Georgia Tech takes this
opportunity to compete against some strong programs from the Sunshine
State in preparation for SIRA championships,
the Dad Vail Regatta, and ACRA.
Overall the team performed well. Eleven boats walked away with
medals including six gold medals in the men’s and women’s novice 4+ B,
women’s lightweight 8+, men’s and women’s lightweight 4+, and men’s
novice 4+ A. These boats also earned betting shirts from their
competitors. Check out our results page for more
info.
The team travels to Oakridge, TN next weekend for the SIRA championships. |

GT Closes Out Head Race Season Strong, One More Race this Fall
Georgia Tech Crew had another strong showing at this year’s Head of the
South Regatta in Augusta, GA on Saturday, November 14, 2009. Of the 10+
colleges represented there, GT finished second, just behind
Jacksonville, a varsity program, by only ten points for the collegiate
team point trophy.
Again Tech saw strong showings from both the men and the women,
bringing home 13 medals overall. The women impressed, taking home gold
in the Club 8+, Lightweight 8+, and Lightweight 4+, and silver in the
Women’s Champ 8+. Them men also took silver in a close race with
Jacksonville in the Men’s Champ 8+, in addition to medals in the Champ
1x, Champ 4+, and Lightweight 8+.
Read about GT Crew in The Augusta Chronicle’s coverage of the race.
Check out the full results and team point standings from this race.
While this was the last head race of the year for GT, the team has one
more race left, a sprint race, to get them pumped up for Spring.
Georgia Tech will be hosting a scrimmage against the University of
Florida in Roswell, GA on Saturday, November 21. Although Emory backed
out of the scrimmage, the teams still anticipate a very exciting race. |

GT Crew Wins by a Landslide at the Chattanooga
Despite
the lack of practice time on the water due to flooding and
contamination in the Chattahoochee, Georgia Tech Crew had a great
showing at their season opener, the Chattanooga Head Race, on Saturday,
October 10, marked by strong showings by all four squads.
On
the men’s side, the Varsity Men took first and third place in the Men’s
Collegiate 8+, and also fielded six other boats that earned medals in
other events. The Novice Men took home silver in the Men’s Novice 8+
along with silver and bronze in the Men’s True Novice 4+ race.
The
women had a strong showing as well. The Varsity Women stacked up well
considering the tough competition with varsity programs. They took gold
in the Women’s Lightweight 4+ and also finished ahead of all of the
other club teams (as well as some varsity boats) in the Women’s
Collegiate 8+ and Women’s Collegiate 4+ races. The Novice Women brought
home gold in the Women’s True Novice 4+ and bronze in the Women’s
Novice 8+.
Overall the team did very well, finishing 1st
among twelve colleges for team points. Georgia Tech gained 653 points,
more than 300 points above second place Clemson University Rowing
Association, clinching the College Team Point Trophy by a landslide
victory.
