Team Update
|
GT Crew Wins by a Landslide at the Chattanooga
(October 10th) Despite
the lack of practice time on the water due to flooding and
contamination in the Chattahoochee, Georgia Tech Crew had a great
showing at their season opener, the Chattanooga Head Race, on Saturday,
October 10, marked by strong showings by all four squads.
On
the men's side, the Varsity Men took first and third place in the Men's
Collegiate 8+, and also fielded six other boats that earned medals in
other events. The Novice Men took home silver in the Men's Novice 8+
along with silver and bronze in the Men's True Novice 4+ race.
The
women had a strong showing as well. The Varsity Women stacked up well
considering the tough competition with varsity programs. They took gold
in the Women's Lightweight 4+ and also finished ahead of all of the
other club teams (as well as some varsity boats) in the Women's
Collegiate 8+ and Women's Collegiate 4+ races. The Novice Women brought
home gold in the Women's True Novice 4+ and bronze in the Women's
Novice 8+.
Overall the team did very well, finishing 1st
among twelve colleges for team points. Georgia Tech gained 653 points,
more than 300 points above second place Clemson University Rowing
Association, clinching the College Team Point Trophy by a landslide
victory.
Check out GT Crew's results page for all of GT's results, or click here for full race results.
October 17th-18th: Head of the Charles (Boston, MA) The GTCA will be at the reunion village
at the Head of the Charles this year. Members of the GTCA who reside
in Boston are planning a GT area in the reunion village with the GT
alumni club in Boston.
We are currently compiling all race times for GT Crew and alumni racing
at the Charles for our website and the tent on race day. If you are racing, of
if you know anyone racing, can you let us know with your information? Find more info and the schedule so far on our website.
November 7th & 8th: Head of the Chattahoochee (Chattanooga,TN)
November 14th: Head of the South (Augusta, GA) November 20th: Tail of the Beaver (Roswell, GA) |

We are making lots of changes... and one of them includes migrating to an official Google Apps website. This allows us to keep all shared documents, our Officer wiki, website and contact lists all in one place. Because of this change, we will be using http://www.gtcrewalumni.org as our official website. You should still be able to reach us http://www.alumni.gtcrew.com once the transition is made, but we urge you to use our new URL from now on. A big thanks to our Treasurer, Bob Baxley for mastering Google and all of it's awesomeness. (And let me tell you, it's pretty awesome.) While you're at our new link, be sure to check out all the Archived Newsletters. They're all there! And did you forget that we have all the legendary Sound Philes? Oh yeah. Pump it up. |

The GT Crew Affinity Group (GTCA) is organized to
promote and facilitate the engagement of GT Crew Alumni, Affiliated
Students, Friends, Faculty and Staff with the Georgia Tech Alumni
Association, the current Georgia Tech Crew team and the Institute as a
whole. In an effort to keep in touch with all our alumni, we will
be sending out this newsletter periodically to let you know what we
are
up to. The easiest way for us to remain in contact with you is for you to continue to receive this newsletter. So please don't unsubscribe unless you really don't want to ever get any information from us. In addition, send it to a fellow teammate, make sure they got it too. If they didn't, they can subscribe right at the bottom of this email. And don't forget, you can always update your bio with us on our website. Thanks for all you do alumni. We appreciate it and so does the team.

Dear Cassi,
|
As most of you should know by now, the Georgia Tech boathouse was hit hard by the flooding of the Chattahoochee River. The main boathouse was at least 6 feet under water with the river stretching all the way to the steps of the Church. It was certainly a sight to see, and if you haven't seen the pictures yet, go look. So, once the water receded, the team came together and cleaned up. Everything was covered in 3-6 inches of mud and the equipment had been scattered all over the yard. Launches and ergs were taken apart and pressure washed, boats, shoes and oars were scrubbed with bleach and the turf on the ground was scraped and scraped to try and remove the ridiculous amounts of mud caked on top of it. After a full days work, things were looking up. But, unfortunately, the team cannot get on the Chattahoochee until further notice. Officials are saying it will be weeks before all the waterways are free of
sewage and sediment, and tons of trash collected by the storms is
cleaned up. According to the AJC, federal officials tested the river and found the E. coli bacteria level was 42 times greater than the highest safe level. So this leaves GT Crew without a home for a while. Thanks to the generous efforts of Lake Lanier, the team has packed up their new big trailer with as many boats that will fit and moved up to Gainesville. They travel up there every weekend, getting in 2 practices a day. It's frustrating and more time consuming, but they are grateful to have a place to row for the time being. We are hopeful that things will improve quickly at home in Roswell and they'll be back in their comfort zone as soon as possible. We'll keep you updated.

Loss of a Good Friend
|
We are sad to announce that a friend of Georgia Tech Rowing has recently passed away.
Douglas Crucet was a great man with a kind heart who spent much time around the GT boathouse these past few years. You may remember him walking his dogs on the path or lending his tools and hands to fix up things around the yard. He was one of the
most generous men the team has ever know. He was a mentor to the team and the coaches. He
will be missed tremendously. Douglas donated the pairs boathouse and
fours boathouse to the team (yes, there are multiple boathouses, sheds and shacks) as well as the six WinTech singles! There are no funeral services, but we know he will be missed and the team is creating a memorial for him.

Elections
|
Nominations have been EXTENDED until October 2nd. This is due to the recent opening of the Merchandise Chair position. Our current merchandising officer, Catherine Owens, has accepted the nomination for President - therefore leaving her previous position open. On
September 14th, active members received a 2009 Voter ID number with the form for nominations. If you do not have a Voter ID number, please become an active member - it's only $25 and you get a t-shirt!
Accepted nominations will be posted on the on our website as they are accepted or rejected. There are already four nominees listed on the site.
Elections will be help from October 5 - October 9, 2009.
On
October 5, voting will begin and all active members are to use their 2009 Voter ID number again to make their selection. You will receive an email with a form for voting and it will also be available online.
The 2009 GTCA positions that are now up for election are: - President
- Secretary
- Events Coordinator
- Merchandise Chair
A simple majority
vote of active members is needed to elect an
officer. All voting will be done by secret ballot through the GTCA
website. New positions are
officially determined during GTCA's Homecoming Weekend: October 17, 2009. You can find more information on our website and if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know. Team Update

10/10/2009 Head of the Chattanooga (Chattanooga, TN):
Last year, Georgia Tech had to compete in borrowed boats because of the
unfortunate trailer accident. This year they'll be coming off the horrible flood that kicked them out of the boathouse... but at least they'll be bringing their own
fleet on their own trailer that was fully funded by us, the GTCA!
10/17-10/18/2009 Head of the Charles (Boston, MA): The GTCA will be at the reunion village
at the Head of the Charles this year. Members of the GTCA who reside
in Boston are planning a GT area in the reunion village with the GT

We are currently compiling all race times for GT Crew and alumni racing

11/07/-11/08/2009 Head of the Chattahoochee (Chattanooga,TN):
The big race of the Fall for all schools in the South. The Head of the
Hooch pits Georgia Tech Crew against some of its stiffer competition in
the South. The women have to face very competitive Division I NCAA crews, like Clemson, while the men take on varsity crews like Jacksonville, and perhaps Florida Tech.
11/14/2009 Head of the South (Augusta, GA): The final
race of the fall season for Georgia Tech Crew. There's no better way to
finish the season than with a win at the Head of the South. Come help
cheer for our athletes as they try to do just that.
11/20/2009 Tail of the Beaver (Roswell, GA): We hope to continue our annual fall scrimmage against UGA
and mix things up by doing some mixed rowing and inviting some other
schools to participate. If you're a local, you don't want to miss this! |
Annual Spring Picnic
|
If you noticed on the left hand side of this email, we have a list of upcoming dates. One of the new additions is the Annual Spring Picnic. We have set a tentative date of April 24th, 2010. Last year we had conflicts with Easter and announced the date a little later than we wanted to. This year, we are going to get you the information as soon as we can so you can start planning your trip now.
2010 will bring many changes and exciting movements within the team and we look forward to celebrating them. In addition, we will be recognizing over 15 years of Coach Rob Canavan and Georgia Tech Crew. 2010 will be Coach Rob's 17th Spring Season with GT Crew! We hope you can join us for this momentous occasion. More info to come soon. |

** IMPORTANT NEWS: Recent record breaking rains have caused serious flooding in Atlanta and has left the GT boathouse a muddy
mess. See our recent post for photos of the flooded GT Boathouse and the results. St. Andrews Rowing and GT Crew are organizing a massive cleanup
for this Saturday, 09-26-09, 7am-1pm. However, this weekend is also recruiting weekend and rowers have committed to working at the Saturday
football game for Fundraising. The
team could really use some help from alumni and friends of GT Crew this weekend for clean-up. Although, be aware that if
rain persists, the cleanup will be postponed and you will be contacted
via e-mail or you can find an update on our website. See more information below.
The GTCA understands that you might not live in Atlanta. However,
we wanted to send this message to you anyways so you could keep up to
date with what is going on. Thanks for understanding that this is the
easiest way to reach any GTCA member who might be able to provide some
support this weekend.

GTCA Boathouse Clean-up Information
|
GT Crew will be at the boathouse on Saturday (9/26/09) morning (weather pending)
from 7AM - 1:00PM to clean up from the recent flooding. If the weather is bad on Saturday, plans for
Sunday are yet to be determined; check this post for further details.
Clean-up will be mostly messy, manual labor and a lot of
cleaning/sanitizing. There will be some mechanical/electrical work with launches and
trailer as well.
If you have any of the following items and can supply them to the clean-up crew, please let us know or bring them with you.
- Electric Generators
- wheelbarrows
- Shovels
- Bleach / disinfectant
- rakes
- wet-vacs
- long push brooms
- squeegees
- compressors
- hoses
- spray nozzles
- trash bins/bags
- pick-up trucks with open cargo beds
- buckets, sponges, rags
- bleach/bleach solutions
- bug spray
Notice:
It is strongly advised to wear pants with legs
tucked into boots. Long sleeves and a hat would
also help protect skin from mosquitoes, and any contamination. Wear
gloves and bug spray as well. Bring a towel and change of dry clothes
and a trash bag for your gear that gets dirty. IT IS A MESS! |

(All arrival times Friday September 25th)
Group #1- Flight arrives @ 7:32 a.m.

Dear Cassi,
|
It's
been
over a year since the GTCA was formed and we are now in the
process of having our 2009 Elections. With our support from the school, we also have funding, newsletters, meeting spaces, a webpage, great relations with
the team, and a lot of fun. However, we are still missing the most
important thing... YOU.
This year, the position of President, Secretary and
Events Chair are up for election. Nominations have been opened to
active members. To keep the GTCA strong, it needs a solid backbone
with you involved to create a good board. The GTCA board has
staggering elections. Treasurer, Communications, and Merchandise will
all remain to ensure smooth transitioning. So, we are urging you,
step up, get involved, help someone else do the same thing you did with
your time at Georgia Tech. Be a part of a group that has fun, helps
others and allows us all to reconnect with some of our greatest
memories of college. If you are an active member, you should have received your Voter ID
from the GTCA on Monday, September 14th, 2009. If you did not receive
your number, please contact Bob Baxley. Make a nomination.See who has already been nominated. Learn more about GTCA membership.

October 17th, 2009: Annual GTCA Homecoming Football Game (see full information here)
Homecoming 2010 Game Tickets: The Yellow Jackets take on Virginia Tech this October 17 for homecoming. It's going to be a huge game so the GTCA is planning well in advance for an exciting tailgate, and for seats at the game. This game is predicted to be a televised night game that will sell out early. The Yellow Jackets are out for revenge as they only lost by 3 points (and a controversial call) to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg last season.
The GTCA has block seats for sale and we want you to join us! Tickets are ALREADY available through the merchandise section of the GTCA webpage. Tickets are now in limited supply, but if the ticket item is available
on the merchandise section of the GTCA webpage (which it was at the
delivery of this newsletter), then there is still a ticket available. The link will automatically go down when all the tickets in the block
are gone. To secure your ticket, simple visit that page to buy a seat
in the GTCA block. Purchased tickets for the
GTCA block will be distributed at the GTCA tailgate on October 17th, 2009.
Tickets are $50, the same price you will get through the Alumni

New Season, Same Goals-Crush and Kill!
After
the families pulled away and the tears were shed from fall move-in, a
select group of students had more important things on their minds,
things like erg tests, catch placement, body prep, spandex, and winning
medals. Georgia Tech Crew is back on the Hooch and its competition
better watch out.
With new assistant coach, Alex Porter, and
several incoming freshmen rowers, the men's team continues its youth
movement with only four rowers and one coxswain set to lose eligibility
this spring. However for Georgia Tech Crew, youth is not an excuse for
mediocrity as the team still returns eight rowers who earned medals at
the ACRA National Championship. The women's
team will use last year's reloading time as a springboard for success
this year. They return their entire team which includes a gold-medal
winning boat at the SIRA Regatta.
With
superior coaching, skill, athleticism and determination Georgia Tech
Crew will do its part to win races this year. We only ask that our fans
do theirs! Come to the regattas and support your favorite crew:
10/10/2009 Head of the Chattanooga (Chattanooga, TN):
Last year, Georgia Tech had to compete in borrowed boats because of the
unfortunate trailer accident. This year they'll be bringing their own
fleet on their own trailer that was fully funded by the Georgia Tech
Crew Alumni (GTCA).
10/17-10/18/2009 Head of the Charles (Boston, MA): The
women's team placed 4th in the Collegiate 4 last year. This year both
teams are expecting to be in medal contention as Georgia Tech Crew
brings its fleet northward. (A couple of friendly faces amid strange
Yankees are always welcome here)
11/07/-11/08/2009 Head of the Chattahoochee (Chattanooga,TN):
The big race of the Fall for all schools in the South. The Head of the
Hooch pits Georgia Tech Crew against some of its stiffer competition in
the South. The women have to face very competitive Division I NCAA crews, like Clemson, while the men take on varsity crews like Jacksonville, and perhaps Florida Tech.
11/14/2009 Head of the South (Augusta, GA): The final
race of the fall season for Georgia Tech Crew. There's no better way to
finish the season than with a win at the Head of the South. Come help
cheer for our athletes as they try to do just that.
OTHER KEY DATES
-
9/25-26/2009 Parents' Weekend at Georgia Tech
-
9/25-26/2009 Recruit Weekend for GT Crew

Dear Cassi,
|
Well folks, the fall season is finally here. The weather is cooler, the leaves are falling from the trees and Dragon*Con was just here just like it is every Labor Day weekend. But more importantly, we have new novices. Brand new rowers, incoming freshmen, newbies wearing their RAT caps (probably not), but they are new to GT Crew. So, we WELCOME them, just as you were once welcomed to the team. Next weekend, the team is hosting their annual "Meet the Novice Party." I don't know a single GT Crew rower who doesn't have an interesting memory of that party! Aren't they lucky? Well, so are you. Because this email is full of awesome information just for you! So, please, read on and get involved... we need YOU! Quick Links: 1. Purchase a ticket to Homecoming in the GTCA block. 2. Read all about the tailgate before the game. 3. Nomination process for 2010 elections.

The Election Process
|
Nominations will be open from September 14 - September 25, 2009. On
September 14th, active members will receive a 2009 election number. With that number, we will provide you with a form to submit nominations for the open GTCA board positions. The form will also be available on our website. The reason for the number is to allow the election system to be completely anonymous yet keep people from voting more than once. To become an active member before the opening date, simply click here. As people are nominated, their names and information will be posted on our nominations page.
Elections will be help from October 5 - October 9, 2009.
On
October 5, voting will begin and all active members are to use their 2009 election number to make their selection. You will receive an email with a form for voting and it will also be available online.
Only active members can nominate and vote. Voting can only occur once per member.
The 2009 GTCA positions that are up for election are: - President
- Secretary
- Events Coordinator
A simple majority
vote of active members is needed to elect an
officer. All voting will be done by secret ballot through the GTCA
website. New positions are
officially determined during GTCA's Homecoming Weekend: October 17, 2009. You can find more information on our website and if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know. Click here to learn more about becoming a ACTIVE MEMBER of the GTCA!If you have received a t-shirt this year, then you are an active member for 2009 and this election process. Special letter from the President
|
A little over one year ago, a few small meetings generated the idea of an alumni organization for GT Crew. Within a few months, the GTCA was born. Over the past year, and through events and communications, the GTCA has connected the family of GT Crew. Since August, 2008, the GTCA board of 6 GT Crew alumni has:
- held 7 official events
- wrote 110 posts on the GTCA webpage
- sent 9 official GTCA newsletters
- met roughly 20 times for open GTCA board meetings
- has raised over $17,000 for GT Crew
- generated 50 active memberships
- built a family of 382 general GTCA members
The first elections for the GTCA board were held in September of 2008. Many of you were at that initial kick-off meeting at the Alumni House on North Avenue. Over the past year a constitution and a set of bylaws were written to help organize the future structure of the GTCA. Through this legislation, elections for the GTCA board will occur ever September or October, and the GTCA board members will be elected on staggered terms. This staggered system will help maintain consistency as newly elected board members can interface with board members who have already held office for a year. This Fall, the President, Events Chair and Secretary positions will be up for election. Next year (2010), the Treasurer, Communications Chair, and Merchandise will be up for election. The current Treasurer, Communications Chair, and Merchandise will stay in place until 2010 elections.
Details of the elections process can be access on the GTCA constitution, or specifically the election process page for 2009.
Through the 2009 elections and homecoming, the current board will stay in place, and the three positions up for election will help with transitioning their position through homecoming (October 17, 2009). I will not be putting my name in the hat for re-election as President. My personal mission over a year ago was to begin the GTCA through events and communications. I feel that the GTCA has accomplished that goal, and because of this, I would like to continue my support of the GTCA by running for the Events Chair position (when nominations open, of course).
The structure currently in place for the GTCA is a solid, strong foundation that will last over time. The GTCA is more than capable of electing a new leader and the GTCA needs you to help with this process. Those who wish to help mold the future of the GTCA, or who would like
to help direct the GTCA with it's current goals and missions are
welcome to run for any of the open positions. Job descriptions can be found on the board member page of the GTCA website.
The future of the GTCA is only as strong as it's active membership. Going forward, we need to continue with a strong board who helps direct the GTCA to work together towards a very bright future for GT Crew and for GT Crew alumni. Thank you for being a part of the GTCA family that will continue to grow and thrive. Your support and participation is always welcome and appreciated. Though we may not all live in Atlanta, you can stay connected by reading newsletters, the GTCA webpage, and by becoming a GTCA member to help support the free events the GTCA provides for all members.
To make a nomination, please submit the nomination form on the elections page (link will be
activated on September 14). Nominee's will be contacted, and a bio for each nominee will be posted
on the nominations page. Nominations are open from September 14 - September 25, 2009, and elections will be help from October 5 - October 9, 2009.
If you have not already, please become an active member by paying the 2009 membership dues. Your membership dues support the GTCA events. By becoming an active member, you will receive an inaugural GTCA T-shirt and you will be able to vote in the 2009 GTCA elections.
Thank you for all your effort so far in making this a successful Affinity Group. I look forward to seeing you at our Fall 2009 events.
Sincerely,
Anne-Marie DeBacker
GTCA President

GTCA Fall Elections
| Happy Birthday to us! It has been a year since the GT Crew Alumni were officially made an Affinity Group with Georgia Tech. And because of that, it's election time! Per Article 4, Section 1 of the GTCA Constitution, all elected board members shall hold their respective offices for a term of two years. All positions will be on staggered terms (Treasurer, Communications and Merchandise staggering with President, Events Chair and Secretary). Therefore, the current GTCA positions that are up for re-election are:- President
- Secretary
- Events Coordinator
Elections are to be held during the week of October 5 - October 9, 2009.
Nominations are open from September 14 - September 25, 2009.
A simple majority vote of active members is needed to elect an officer. All voting will be done by secret ballot through the GTCA website.New positions are official sworn in at the October GTCA banquet during homecoming weekend. You can find more information on our website and if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let us know. Click here to learn more about becoming a ACTIVE MEMBER of the GTCA!If you have received a t-shirt this year, then you are an active member for 2009 and this election process. If you haven't, go get one! |
Join a Committee
| At the last GTCA meeting, the board members voted in a new committee. As all committees before this one, it is open to all members of the GTCA. If you would like to join the new Steering Committee or any other existing committee, we urge you to visit our website to learn more about them. Once you have completed our form, the committee leader will be in touch with you to discuss your future role with the group as well as upcoming meeting times. We look forward to working with you.
Steering Committee (headed up by Bob Baxley & Cassi Niemann) The Steering Committee will evaluate the current structure of GT Crew with a focus on coach staffing and capital investment decisions. The ultimate goal of the committee is to build a model or plan towards governing future coaching, officer, and alumni relationship at GT Crew. This includes developing a structure where GT Crew can utilize the GTCA to facilitate, mediate and/or monitor coach staffing and capital investment decisions. The output of this committee will be proposed GT Crew and GTCA legislation to implement the agreed upon interaction model.
|
Addition to the Coaching Staff
| The GTCA would like to welcome Alex Porter, the latest addition to the GT Crew coaching staff. Alex will be assisting the Varsity Men with Coach Rob Canavan. He has already made a good impression on the team as he has been at FASET to help recruit incoming freshmen. The team is really looking forward to having him help them out this year. Alex started rowing freshman year of college at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and immediately fell in love with the sport. Alex tells us that RPI Crew is a relatively small program, but as we know from GT, he learned a lot and was very active with the team's social life and administration - from recruiting to equipment maintenance. Early in the spring semester of his junior year the team found itself without a coach, so Alex went out and got his certification and started coaching. In the fall of 2008 he took over the coaching of the novice team with a fellow teammate and trained up the fastest novice team RPI Crew had seen in years. Alex decided Around then that coaching crew was a career path he wanted to follow.
Alex received a B.S. in Economics from RPI in May 2009 and will probably pursue an MBA in the future. A few of his hobbies are woodworking, ultimate frisbee, and skiing. He hates winter training and loathes the prospect of long hours on the erg. He likes all music that rocks, especially anything Jimmy Page or Green Day. He also enjoys cooking and has a strong belief that all men should know how to barbecue.
Welcome to the team Alex! |

Georgia Tech Crew Alumni Newsletter Another Hotlanta Summer
Monday July 20th, 2009 |
|
| Important Dates
| Homecoming: October 17th, 2009
|
|
| | Dear Robert, | Hello Alumni! We're sorry for the delay in this newsletter - we took a little break. Getting this whole Affinity group up and running is quite a bit of work for our small board! Therefore, at the end of the school year, we decided to lengthen the time between meetings and focus on establishing our mission and structure. But fear not alumni and friends... we are back at it again for the fall season!
Below, you will find the different things we are working on and a few of our ideas for the upcoming fall. We invite you to join us at our monthly meetings and get involved. In order to provide a positive connection between alumni and the team, as well as each other, we need your help. So come on out and see what it's all about.
|
GTCA Meetings
| The next GTCA meeting will be Monday, August 10th, 2009 at 6:30pm. The location is the College of Management at Technology Square on 5th Street by Georgia Tech's Campus. All are welcome to attend. You can see all of our meeting minutes here.

|
| GT Crew History
| One of the things that both GT Crew Officers and the GTCA have set out to do this year is compile the complete history of the team.
Our goal is to have it finished and presentable before our 25 Year Anniversary (which if you haven't noticed will be celebrated in the Fall of 2011 - about 802 days away). Thanks to the initiation of Sarah Sassler, the GT Crew Alumni Relations officer, the GTCA has already begun to compile this history - including Dad Vail medals (and line-ups), big moments in GT Crew, important people, all coaches and any other big wins. We will soon be calling on our alumni to fill in the gaps as we get things sorted out.
For now, we invite you to look at our Boat History on the webpage. Please take note that this list is still evolving... so if you have some information to add, please fill out our Contact Us form and let us know!
|
Constitution
| Another topic of discussion this summer has been over the development of the GT Crew Alumni Affinity Group Constitution. With much thanks to our President, Anne-Marie DeBacker, the document is finally completed. You can see the entire Constitution, created specifically for this group, on a new page on our website: Mission & Structure. We invite you to check it out. We want to make sure all of our alumni and friends know what we are all about and how we plan to do the things we do. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. We're always ready to listen as we continue to grow! |
Membership
| An important article in the Constitution is in reference to membership. We urge all of our alumni and friends to become active members in the GTCA. Active membership will include any person that has contributed to the mission of the GT Crew Affinity Group and who has paid $25 in annual dues. A donation to the GT Foundation does not fulfill the annual dues responsibility for active members. Benefits of active membership currently entail a yearly t-shirt, discounted membership price for various events, as well as nomination and voting privileges in the GTCA elections. Please notice that even if you choose not to become an active member, you will STILL get our newsletter and event invitations. We don't want anyone to be left out but we do need help keeping our group together. Click here to learn more about becoming a ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE GTCA!So to simplify, if you have received a t-shirt this year, then you are an active member for 2009. If you haven't, go get one! If anyone has any questions concerning membership, please feel free to contact us. |
Upcoming Events
| The GT Homecoming Football Game of 2009 will be held on October 17. Mark your calenders early and plan on joining us for the annual Tailgate! In addition to that event, we are considering hosting a brunch or dinner that weekend as well. Please help us decide what to do by filling out this really simple, small survey!
We hope you didn't forget that we have finally added bumper stickers to our merchandise! And get this... they are real bumper stickers that look just like the image to the right! Get yours today by checking out our merchandise shop! |

| Dad Vail Recap
| Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, PA What is a Dad Vail Regatta without a little excitement... both on and off the water. This year's event gave us a few confusing moments but over all, it was still a great time! See the pictures from the event.
Starting Friday, due to the excess of rain this past week, the river had a lot of debris floating around which then caused an issue with laying out the lanes. Therefore, for the heats, the officials decided to send the boats down in time trials - very much like a head race - on 10 second centers. Although this made for a somewhat boring day of racing for the Alumni, the official spectating tent was still set up with food and drinks and we enjoyed the day by the water with good friends.
On Friday night after the heats (in which Georgia Tech had 10 boats racing), the first inaugural team-alumni dinner and clean plate club meeting was held at the Spaghetti Warehouse. 100 alumni, parents and rowers attended and it was a great evening of celebration for Georgia Tech.
Under the tent on Saturday we had loads of free food and beverage provided for alumni, parents and rowers of GT Crew! The 20' x 30' tent was co hosted by the GTCA and the local Delaware Valley / Philadelphia GT Alumni Club and a big thanks goes out to them for all their help with food and drinks. With the additional support of the Alumni Association, and the Georgia Tech Division of Student Affairs, alumni and friends from all over the country were able to enjoy a beautiful day on the river. And, believe it or not, it didn't rain at all.
The GTCA would like to congratulate all of the rowers who competed at Dad Vails this year. It was a very strong year with 10 boats competing. We're looking forward to see what you can do next year! Here are the top five finishing boats:
Men's Novice Lightweight 8+: Bronze (Congrats to Coach and GT Crew Alum Slim Jim Price)
Men's Varsity Lightweight 8+: Silver
Women's Varsity Lightweight 8+: Sixth place overall (Congrats to Coach and GT Crew Alum Liz Henry) Men's Varsity 4+: Sixth place overall
Men's Pair: Fourth place overall
Read about the full race results in the Team Updates section. We hope to see you at Dad Vails in 2010. And don't forget to visit our pictures page to see more familiar faces.
The GTCA would like to give a special thanks to Delaware Valley/Philadelphia GT Alumni President Jim Craven and GT Crew Friend Jenny Yusin for all the help and support they gave the GTCA this past weekend. We really appreciate it!

Alumni Announcements
| Last newsletter we stated that it was wedding season! Well, the announcements have come flooding in... here's another one! Congratulations to Kimberly Cooper, who rowed 2002-2004. She is getting married on September 12th to Chris Bryce!
Also, some of our old teammates are moving around! This month, long time rower and coach Steve Georgalis will be moving to New York City with his wife Veronica! They are looking to sell OR RENT their awesome two bedroom loft in Midtown Atlanta. Check out their beautiful photos on their website. The rent price is not listed online yet but will be $1500/month.
In addition to selling their condo, they are also trying to sell their car! Who needs a car in NYC? It is a 1996 Black Volvo 850 with 200k miles, brand new front and rear brake pads and calipers. There was only one owner the entire time, and the only thing wrong is a crack in the windshield. Steve is offering a GT Crew friendly discount at $2500. Please contact Steve through his website if you're interested.
If you or anyone else is moving, getting married or doing something just as exciting, please fill out our form! |
Inaugural Membership
| Don't forget to get your inaugural t-shirt before the summer! They are available to anyone who wants to become a founding member of the Affinity Group! They looked great on the side of the river at the races this weekend! Find out more.
In addition, we have added bumper stickers to our merchandise! FINALLY - real bumper stickers that look just like the image to the right! Get yours today by checking out our merchandise shop! |
| The GT Crew Affinity Group (GTCA) is organized to promote and facilitate the engagement of GT Crew Alumni, Affiliated Students, Friends, Faculty and Staff with the Georgia Tech Alumni Association, the current Georgia Tech Crew team and the Institute as a whole. In an effort to keep in touch with all our alumni, we will be sending out this newsletter every other Friday to let you know what we are up to. Sincerely,

| Dad Vail Events
| May 8th and 9th, 2009 Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, PA
Just like you remember it... except the after-race shenanigans can happen during the races and no one has to lose weight! For 2009, the alumni are officially hosting a tent at the Dad Vail regatta. Tell your old teammates in Philly and in all the northeast to get ready for us... we're taking a trip to Jim's on South Street!
An official spectating tent with food and beverage will be provided for free! FREE!!
The GTCA will be co-hosting this event with the local Delaware Valley / Philadelphia GT alumni club. With the support of the Alumni Association, and the Georgia Tech Division of Student Affairs, Georgia Tech Alumni will have a tent alongside the Skuykill river to cheer on GT Crew. We hope you can join us at this exciting end of the year regatta!
One of the special events brought to you by the GTCA will be the first inaugural team-alumni dinner and clean plate club meeting on Friday night of Dad Vails in Philadelphia. The entire team will be present and many local alumni have already registered. So, please join us and register by Monday, May 4th at 5pm for this unique opportunity. It's easy to register online - just click here to go to the google Check-out on our website!
We hope to see you at the races on Friday & Saturday. It should be a great time!

Pi-Mile Road Race
| The GT Crew Affinity group WINS THE PI-MILE ROAD RACE!!!

For the first time, the GTCA entered the 2009 Pi Mile race (organized by the GT Alumni Association) as a team. The fastest Tech Alumni team won a $500 check towards it's corresponding student organizations' scholarship fund. Over 25 alumni teams entered, but only one alumni team has a rich history of training on stadiums, hills, swim tests, spumoni challenges, weights, beach olympics, erg workouts, and red neck hot tubs. The GTCA won for the fastest alumni group. The total time of the top 5 finishers from each team determined the winner. Though many GTCA members participated in this 3.14 mile race ( in their official GTCA racing tee that members receive for free when racing with the GTCA), here are the top five finishers results: Brian Waters placed 6th overall and 2nd in his age group. Bart DeBacker placed 18th overall and 3rd in his age group. Taylor Bronikowski placed 35th overall and 7th in his age group. Mark Filer placed 43rd overall and 7th in his age group. Anne-Marie DeBacker placed 16th overall and 7th in her age group. Thank you very much to everyone who ran with the GTCA and to those who cheered us on. We will see you next year!

Team Update
| In the last newsletter, we brought to you a story about a shared experience at the SIRA regatta from Alumnae Anne-Marie (Richards) DeBacker and Cassi Niemann. One which ended each year with the gold medal lost by less than a second. At the end of that story, the GTCA asked the current women's team to let GT Crew's history be the fuel for their fire.
Well, they did just that. Congratulations to the first Varsity Women's Lightweight 8+ to win GOLD at SIRA!
Following this result, the women then became ranked in the top 10 lightweight women's teams in the American Collegiate Rowing Association Poll. In the last poll taken on April 29th, they were ranked 4th (tied with 3rd). Congratulations ladies, the GTCA is very proud of you. We look forward to your races at the Dad Vail Regatta!
Yet, the varsity women are not the only ones that deserve a congratulations. The rest of the team did very well and we'd like to share the full results from SIRA, held on April 18th & 19th in Oakridge, Tennessee.
Gold Medals:
Varsity Women's Lightweight 8+
Silver Medals:
Varsity Men's Open 4+ Novice Men's Lightweight 8+ (medal was not awarded due to disqualification of boat...but they did get second!)
Honorable Mentions:
Varsity Women's Open 4+ - second in the B final Novice Men's 8+ - third in the B final Men's Varsity Lightweight 4+ - participated in the grand final
The team felt that across the board they had a strong showing. Off the water was just as good. Oakridge GT Alumni came and set up a tent on Saturday, grilling out and showing their support. The novice men were actually able to stay at Dr. Dan Miles house as he lives right down the road from the course! Hopefully each year the team will have a more support at every race from the GTCA and local GT alumni.
