At the 2009 annual GTCA homecoming tailgate, 60 attendees braved the cold weather and enjoyed warm BBQ from Fox Brothers BBQ.
Adviser Rosalind Meyers and old Sports Club Director Dan Hazlett made
an appearance and caught up with rowers who graduated from 1999 through
to 2009. Alumni traveled from Texas, Florida, New Jersey and all
across the US to reconnect with GT Crew. Besides the delicious
food and wonderful company, the cornhole tournament and the football
game were exciting competitions. Cornhole champion Mark Keifert took
his team to first place again while Bart and Ree DeBacker moved all the
way up to second place this year. Prizes were courtesy of the Georgia
Tech Alumni Association. Koozies and other give-aways provided a fun
atmosphere. The football game was one that Georgia Tech will never forget. The #19 Yellow Jackets' 28-23 upset over #5 Virginia Tech was its first win at home against a
team ranked in the top five nationally since 1962. Tech
was up the whole game, and the GTCA block was festive to say the least.
GTCA secretary Cameron Troxel was out to make some friends, and some
enemies while keeping the rest of the GTCA block laughing. Needless to
say, it was alll the wwaaayyy turned up. |

This summer we're taking the GT Crew Alumni Meetings on the road and
we've already hit up Midtown's Cypress Pint + Plate, the Brewhouse in
L5P, Ormsby's on the west side and even Ruth's Chris downtown!
So where are we headed next? This time, we're going to Twain's in Decatur. We'll
pick out a good table at Twain's and order some fresh brewed beer, made
right there in the restaurant! So come join us and see what's going on
with the GTCA. You can even take MARTA. (It's smarta.)
And as we near the end of the summer, we are REALLY looking for some
help with our FALL 2010 events. Help us plan the homecoming tailgate,
our presence at regattas, happy hours, networking events, new
merchandise, fundraising, or whatever you have in mind! So if you're
interested in doing anything, please drop by and we'll figure it out.
And remember, for any GTCA active member that comes to our meeting, your
beer is on us! (Did I mention you can take MARTA?)
See you on the 19th at Twain's in Decatur! RSVP ON FACEBOOK |

Despite thunderstorms, the GTCA and the GT Crew Team had a great time at the 2010 Annual Spring Picnic. The alumni row was scheduled to be the main event in 2010. However, with lightening and thunder overhead, this was quickly canceled. Festive decorations, tables, chairs and lots of food were still set up in the boathouse. Rowers and alumni gathered inside to listen to music and celebrate the spring season together. Lunch was delicious and alumni were able to visit with old friends. See pictures of the event.Speeches were given and here is a recap: - Catherine Owens, GTCA President: Introduced new GTCA members (GT Crew graduating seniors). Presented them with free 2010 active membership.
- Coaches Ross Beattie and Rob Canavan: Gave a recap of the men's and woman's success this fall and spring. They also indicated what we can look for at Dad Vails this May.
- Bob Baxley, GTCA Treasurer: Explained the newest financial accomplishment of the GTCA. An endowment for GT Crew has been formed. The GTCA donated $6500 to bring the team up to $25,000, which is the minimum needed to start an endowment with the Georgia Tech Foundation. The best thing about an endowment is that it never gets smaller. It should earn at least 4% annually.
- Slim Jim Price, men's novice coach and GTCA member: Honored coach Rob Canavan for his 15 years of service to GT Crew. Rob Canavan consistency and perseverance for excellence has formed GT Crew to the successful team it is today. Coach Rob Canavan has been named the 2010 Dad Vail coach of the year!

Last year, the GTCA entered the Pi Mile as a team for the first time. Each year, the fastest Tech Alumni team wins a $500 check towards it's
corresponding student organizations' scholarship fund. Over 25 alumni
teams entered in 2009, but the GTCA conquered all and won for alumni team points. Our alumni have a rich history of training
on stadiums, hills, swim tests, spumoni challenges, weights, beach
olympics, erg workouts, and red neck hot tubs. It is only fitting that we should win a running race, but it is now our job to defend our title as winners (and earn another $500). See this post to read more about the 2009 race.If you
can't run, join us at our staging area on the Tech Tower lawn and be
prepared to cheer loud! The winners of the race will be determined by
averaging the five
lowest times from each group. GTCA members who race with us will
receive a FREE GTCA Racing T-Shirt. Meet at the Tech Tower lawn before
the race (7:30am)
to gear up. After the race, we'll meet back there for some much
deserved food & drinks!! Register online RIGHT NOW. (Be sure to select GT Crew Affinity Group as your team.)38th Annual Dean Griffin Pi Mile 5k Road Race: Tech Tower Lawn, Georgia Tech Campus
Saturday, April 17
7:00 a.m. Registration: Pick up your number. Recruit alumni you run into on the lawn to race with the GTCA...that was fun last year.
7:30 a.m. Meet at GT Crew Alumni area on Tech Tower lawn - get your free GTCA racing t-shirt (and plan to wear it when you run)
8:00 a.m. Race
8:30 a.m. Meet back at GTCA area for post-race food, drink & fun! When you register, be sure to choose Georgia Tech Crew Affinity Group as your team from the pull-down menu.
Why
register as GTCA Affinity Group?? Because with the team, we get the
chance to win $500 for GT Crew. The winners will be determined by
averaging the five lowest
times from each group. Each team must have a minimum of five runners.
Registration Fees are $25 before April 7th.
REGISTER for the Pi Mile HERE
Non-GT Crew Alumni can be on our team! Just choose the GTCA as your team when you register. Non-Atlanta GTCA members can support the pi mile. Check out Shelly's Holdren unique Pi pie in pictures below |

Despite
the weather forecast, Saturday was surprisingly lovely weather, and the GT
Crew tent at reunion village was a fantastic setup! Boats crossed right
in front of GT Alumni, and the tent was a direct view of all the crews. Friends were made with all the surrounding
alumni, (partially because Brian brought some hot chocolate!). The announcers received some hot chocolate
too, and Georgia Tech got some serious mic time when they crossed by in return. GT boats were cheered on as they crossed by,
and everyone had a good time.
Although Homecoming fell on the same day and the whole weather was
predicted to be very cold, the GT Crew tent was a fun area. Many GT Alumni came by from the GT Club in
Boston. They were educated on rowing by
GTCA members. Sunday, unfortunately, was
terrible cold (it was snowing). Because
of this extreme cold, there was no alumni tent. However, the GTCA and the
GT Club in Boston will be back again in 2010!
Cheer on the Georgia Tech Rowing Team in the official GT Alumni tent in Reunion Village at The Head of the Charles Regatta on Saturday, October 17th and Sunday, October 18th. As you know, this is one of the world's largest and most prestigious regattas with 7,500 athletes from around the world competing in 55 different races. It is quite a spectacular event, and a longstanding Boston tradition with over 300,000 spectators along the river's edge throughout the weekend.
In recent history, GT has placed near the top of their boat class in several events including the Men's Collegiate 8+ and the Women's Club 4+.
On Saturday, the Men's and Women's Collegiate 4+'s will Race in the afternoon. Join other members from the GTCA and from the GT Boston alumni club for food and drinks at the Reunion Village tent to hang out with fellow alumni and rowers. The atmosphere can be described as "tailgate" and will be a great prelude to watching the homecoming Football Game vs Va Tech that evening. The Reunion Village features a big screen tv with live webcast and race results, play-by-play commentary, a "River's Edge" view of the competition, and interaction with over 30 other alumni groups. We will have snacks and drinks on Saturday, but there will be food as well as beer and wine from the concessions to purchase (cash).
On Sunday, the Men's and Women's Collegiate 8+'s will be rowing, as well as the Men's Lightweight 8+. Again join fellow GT Crew enthusiasts at the Reunion Village tent, for food and drinks, to cheer on the rowers. Lunch in addition to drinks and snacks will be at the GT tent on Sunday,
and like Saturday, the concessions will also be open.
Admission to the Reunion Village is 3$ for individuals and 5$ for couples.
Feel free to come Saturday, Sunday, or both days.

Game Ticket informationAs a new tradition, the GTCA had block seats at the homecoming game this year.
